Conversion to .avi of some problematic .flv files

Recently I ve found in the net some .flv files that does not play in mplayer nor vlc (under Ubuntu intrepid), both complaining with a message:


[flv @ 0x8837aa8]Unsupported video codec (7)

These files comes encoded with the H.264 codec, and for a reason I ignore, mplayer and vlc refuses to play them, despite they support such a encoding. ffmpeg, however does, but not certainly the version shipped with Ubuntu. So the trick is to compile the latest sources of ffmpeg, which you can find via svn at:


svn checkout svn://svn.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg

As the idea is to compile and use a new version of ffmpeg without touching the Ubuntu's version, you can compile it statically and install it in a directory of your own:


./configure --prefix=/path/to/your/dir --enable-static
make
make install

It is not necessary to do this under root (in fact the idea is avoid being root). Once compiled, you can use your new ffmpeg to convert the annoying file:


/path/to/your/dir/bin/ffmpeg -i your_annoying_file.flv -vcodec copy your_new_file.avi

And voilà! (at last it worked for me!)

You can embed an image inside the img tag, in this way:

 src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODl... (base64 letters) .../gAwXEQA7"

The image is encoded in base64 and won't be read from a file! This works on all the decent web browsers, so don't expect a good behavior on IE.

Definitively, the .deb binary for Ubuntu of skencil is broken, it doesn't work. According I have read in the Internet, it fails because Ubuntu 7.10 uses Python 2.5, which is incompatible with skencil. Fortunately, surfing the web I found on http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-679508.html the hack to compile from source skencil. The trick is to install Python 2.4 concurrently with 2.5 . From that webpage:

FENIAN: I got skencil working by doing this,open a terminal and enter the following lines (enter each line seperately)...

in order to substitute a "Y" for a "P", the command should be:

sed s/Y/P/g < ppp.txt

the substituted string will go to the standard output. I you wish, you can redirect it to a file:

I wanted to replace all the newline caracters of an ascii text for a single space. The way to say to emacs in the search/replace menu for the ENTER is ctrl-q ctrl-j, so it understands it is an ENTER character.
It could be good for me to know how to do the same in openoffice and kate

In order to include the nano editor inside the geexbox linux distribution, the following steps has to be made:

Download the geexbox sources
Compile it in order to have a working toolchain
In the sources directory create a new directory named nano
Download the last distribution of nano from http://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v2.0/nano-2.0.3.tar.gz and put it in the nano directory
Now in the packages directory, add a directory named nano and create the following files here:

packages/build :

Finally, a make will build a new .iso, including the nano editor
